Otolaryngology Elective Clerkship

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology offers a four-week external rotation in otolaryngology. Medical students will participate in clinic, the operating room and the inpatient floor service. They will gain exposure to general otolaryngology and subspecialties including head and neck surgery, rhinology, laryngology, sleep, plastic reconstructive surgery, otology and pediatric otolaryngology. Students work one-on-one with faculty in clinic and with the resident team in the OR and on the inpatient floors.

We accept seniors from LCME-accredited or COCA-accredited medical schools only. The course number is SUR 759.

All applicants must meet these requirements:

  • Have no preclinical or clinical failures
  • Have an intention to pursue a career in Otorhinolaryngology
  • Have a strong interest in pursuing residency training at Rush

As part of the application process, we request that students include the below information in an email to Kathleen Javor.

  1. Board Scores
    Must have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1
  2. Statement of Interest
    Please briefly state your interest in applying for a visiting rotation in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Rush.
  3. Please attach your CV

Applicants who are accepted for a rotation will then be asked to complete the online Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) in order to register the course with RUSH Medical College. Of note, do not apply to VSAS unless you have been notified of acceptance for a rotation.

All students must have proof of adequate immunizations and proof of adequate malpractice insurance. This information will be required to be submitted with your VSAS documentation.

We are now accepting applications for Summer and Fall 2024 though we have limited spots remaining. Please send in your application to be considered for a spot or to be put on the waitlist.
