SBIRT has been endorsed by a range of national experts. The Office of National Drug Control Policy identified SBIRT as a key strategy for reducing substance abuse and related consequences in its 2016 National Drug Control Strategy. The National Institute of Drug Abuse’s Principals of Effective Adolescent Treatment emphasizes the importance of identifying and intervening in drug abuse early and recommended that health care providers ask adolescents about substance use as part of routine medical visits.
