REDCap is a secure tool Rush offers researchers for managing databases and surveys online. You can use it to collect virtually any type of data from people in any environment.
-
If you’re a Rush employee, you can do the following:
- Create a REDCap account.
- Reset your username or password.
- Get help from the Rush Information Services (IS) help desk by calling (312) 942-4257 or emailing help@rush.edu.
If you need to reset your login or password, do so here. If you need further help, please call the Rush IS help desk: (312) 942-4357 or email help@rush.edu. Please note it’s Rush policy that any Rush account inactive within a six-month period will be disabled.
If you’re not a Rush employee and need a REDCap account, fill out an external account request form. We’ll review your request and, when it’s approved, create an account for you.
-
The project owner in REDCap usually provides access to collaborators. In many cases, however, it’s the data manager or the PI of the project in REDCap who will do so. There are two steps required for getting access.
- If you have never logged into REDCap before, please log in with your Rush login ID.
- Once you’ve logged in, inform the owner of the project so they can add you.
-
REDCap e-consent records consent forms and signatures from participants. The consent process can happen either on site or remotely. You can also use the platform to consent in person.
Creating an e-consent
You can build your own project or use an e-consent template. Use the guidance document for creating an e-consent.
Obtaining and using required documents for e-consent
REDCap e-consent projects require the following data instruments or documents:
- IRB stamped, approved informed consent form (ICF)
- Consent collection form
- Consent process documentation
- You can include any IRB-approved addendum or questionnaire from participants too. You can also always update these forms according to your project, but note the IRB stamped, approved ICF is required beforehand.
-
If the patient is consented using a non-electronic method, the ICF document would need to be scanned and uploaded to REDCap. You can use the upload link on the Rush Research Portal.
-
- External collaborators should fill out the account request form.
- Once a user completes the form above, the PI/sponsor will authorize it.
- Rush will then create a new REDCap account for the user.
- The Rush PI/Sponsor can then share the account request with the external collaborator.
-
If you have an amended ICF (or need to create one) for which e-consenting is required, please ensure you have the following:
- Copied your current ICF project to a new project or create a new document
- Entered the amended ICF into the new document
- Shut off access to the old ICF project so it is no longer used for consents
-
Adding and removing users on REDCap is simple and easy. Just follow these steps:
- Click on the project name.
- Click on the “Project Home” tab.
- Click on the “User Rights” button under “Quick Tasks.”
- Click on the username.
- Go to “Edit User Privileges.”
- Add/ remove the user.
-
You can use any project(s) in REDCap in order to adhere to HIPAA regulations; however, you will need to implement additional necessary procedures yourself in order to become fully compliant. Compliance requires the following:
- REDCap provides a secure environment for REDCap instances. Login accounts to these instances are provided and monitored by Rush IS personnel.
- The user side, which is outside the purview of REDCap requires all new external partners, collaborators or data monitors to accept the Rush REDCap end-user agreement with a Rush sponsor before creating an account.
-
The REDCap support team holds two office hours sessions per week. All users are welcome to join. If you’re interested, please send a request to redcap@rush.edu. Additionally, office hours are Tuesday, 10 a.m. - Noon, and Thursday, 10 a.m. - Noon.
