The Chicago Area Patient Centered Outcomes Research Network, or CAPriCORN, asthma group at Rush University is led by allergists/immunologists. We partner with other asthma researchers from local Chicago institutions (University of Illinois-Chicago, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicgo, Loyola University, NorthShore University Health System, Jesse H. Brown and Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Cook County Health and Stroger Hospital and Alliance of Chicago Community Health Services) as part of the asthma cohort. The purpose of the asthma group is to use an electronic health record, or EHR, algorithm to identify and adult and pediatric patients with asthma in all CAPriCORN institutions both to recruit patients for the asthma cohort and to interact with ongoing multicenter asthma trials conducted in Chicago.
Our work
We have implemented an asthma algorithm to identify asthma and health controls from the EHR. We have validated the positive predictive value and negative predictive value, which we presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) 2016 Annual meeting
- We are currently recruiting adult and pediatric asthma patients for interviews to determine how they are affected by asthma and other comorbid conditions.
