Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Rush University Medical Center Psychiatry Residency Program. The general psychiatry residency program has been designed to provide residents with comprehensive training in all of the major areas of clinical and scholarly activity pertinent to a general psychiatrist. Supported by supervision from experienced and enthusiastic faculty, senior residents, academic conferences and protected didactic seminars, the residency program aims to develop residents into highly qualified and thoughtful psychiatrists.
At Rush, we offer academic and clinical training and research in a diverse urban environment. Residents evaluate and treat a diverse patient population from all cultural, social and economic backgrounds, presenting with a wide range of psychopathologies. Our residents are well prepared to practice in any setting after they graduate.
Our residents work together as a cohesive group, training in a broad range of clinical settings that include two adult inpatient psychiatric units and multiple outpatient psychiatric clinics (general adult, women’s health, mood disorders, child and adolescent, addictions, and geriatrics) on the Rush University campus. Our residents collaborate with a variety of professions (e.g., social workers, case managers, medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, security, occupational therapists, psychologists and physical therapists) across these inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents train in multidisciplinary settings to optimize the care of their patients.
We train our residents in a range of therapeutic modalities including major psychotherapies, psychopharmacology and neuromodulatory treatments. Residents learn to critically appraise and thoughtfully implement evidence-based medicine as they build competence across a broad range of therapeutic modalities. They are trained to become effective consumers of psychiatric literature by critically evaluating data and translating this knowledge into practice and education.
Our faculty includes experts in pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, geriatric psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation liaison psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, collaborative care medicine, population health, substance use disorders, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma. Residents interact with faculty, alumni, and experts from outside institutions to learn about current thinking, opportunities, and challenges in the field. We produce future leaders in psychiatry who will make important contributions to the field and effectively train the next generation of psychiatrists.
