The academic year is divided into twenty-six two-week blocks (an X+Y+Z system). Primary sites include RUSH University Medical Center, John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and The RUSH Adult and Pediatric Primary Care clinic, where residents experience longitudinal ambulatory care. Tailored to resident interest, rotations may also take place at various nonprimary locations.
The "Guidelines for Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Training Programs," jointly approved by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics, provide guidance for Med-Peds Programs.
The RUSH Med-Peds curriculum is carefully designed to meet these guidelines while striking a balance between experiences in primary and tertiary care and between inpatient and outpatient settings. Flexibility is maintained to allow residents to pursue special interests.
Rotations
The Med-Peds Residency strives for this balance. Residents rotate between internal medicine and pediatrics at least every three months.
- Intern year is calendar 12 months
- The academic year is twenty-six, two-week rotations.
- Residency schedules are 2 or 4 week blocks including 4 weeks of vacation.
- During the first year of training residents typically switch every 3 months between internal medicine and pediatrics.
- In the last 2 years of training residents switch as often as every 1-2 months depending on requirements and individualized schedules.
- Research Blocks and away rotations (4 weeks of each total over the course of the last 2 years) are also available to those that are interested.
