Child Care
- Bright Horizons can help find local, temporary care to fill care gaps. Rush employees receive 10 annual credits toward Bright Horizon services, to be used for backup elder care, childcare or pet care. Employees can jump ahead on the waitlist at select Bright Horizons centers or enjoy exclusive discounts at participating partner centers that make childcare more affordable. - Laurance Armour Day School (LADS) provides preschool and day care facility for infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children. For additional information, including its program, eligibility, tuition and fees, employees can call (312) 942-6501.
Dental Insurance
Rush offers two dental options the cover a variety of preventative, basic, major, and orthodontic services--Cigna PPO and Cigna HMO. Rush pays the full cost for employee only coverage and offers you the opportunity to purchase coverage for your eligible spouse and/or child for an additional premium.

PerkSpot provides a variety of personalized discounts, savings and rewards for all Rush employees. It helps you save on everything from electronics, home goods, gym memberships, meal delivery, mortgages. Education Assistance Benefit
As part of Rush’s commitment to employee development and education, Residents may voluntarily participate in Education Assistance Benefits.
- The Enhancement Program reimburses up to 90% eligible costs including tuition, fees and books for non-degree classes, workshops, seminars and conferences. Full-time employees may submit up to $1,000 per year; part-time employees may submit up to $500 per year. Residents and fellows are eligible beginning their date of hire at Rush. However, expenses must be incurred after employment begins.
- The Rush University Internal Degree Program prepays tuition for up to nine credit hours per quarter for full-time employees (excluding medical school) and six credit hours for part-time employees. You are eligible for payment of undergraduate and graduate level coursework as of your date of hire at Rush. However, expenses must be incurred after employment begins.
- The Internal Degree Program for Dependents reimburses spouses or dependents of full-time employees for up to nine credit hours per term at Rush University.

Educational Stipend
House staff will receive an educational stipend added to their paycheck at the beginning of the academic year in a lump sum. First-year residents will receive $1500, and second-year and above house staff will receive $2000.
Flex Spending Accounts (FSAs) for medical, dependent care and transportation expenses
FSAs offer you a way to save money on a pre-tax basis to pay eligible health care, dependent care and commuter expenses. The money, through payroll deductions, goes into your accounts tax free as long as you follow IRS rules for how to use the money. Participation is voluntary and you have the opportunity to enroll in FSAs when you are first eligible, and each year during Open Enrollment you must make new health/dependent care FSA elections for the following year.
Rush offers eligible employees several FSA options:
- Health Care FSA: Set aside up to $3,200/year during Open Enrollment to pay for qualified medical, dental and vision expenses that are not covered by your benefits. You cannot participate in this FSA if you are enrolled in the Rush HDHP with HSA.
- Limited Purpose Health Care FSA: Set aside up to $3,200/year during Open Enrollment to pay for qualified dental and vision expenses that are not covered by your benefits. You must be enrolled in the Rush HDHP with HSA to set up this type of account.
- Dependent Care FSA: Set aside up to $5,000/year during Open Enrollment to pay for qualified daycare expenses for eligible children, spouse or parent.
- Commuter FSA: Enroll, pause or update either or both accounts at any time:
- Up to $315/month for a transit account to pay for eligible workplace mass transit expenses including subway, train, bus, etc.
- Up to $315/month for a parking account to pay for parking at a non-Rush garage.

Flexible Wellness Allowance
House staff will receive a stipend of $1200 per year for meals, added to their paychecks in four quarterly payments.
Health Insurance
Rush offers three medical plan options – Rush High Deductible Health Plan with Health Savings Account, Rush Core Preferred Provider Organization, Rush Exclusive Provider Organization. You and Rush share the cost of coverage based on the option you choose and the coverage level you select – employee only, employee and child(ren), employee and spouse or employee and family. The Rush medical plan options are designed to save you money when you get care from Rush providers and at Rush facilities. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums are the lowest when you use Rush providers. For help finding a Rush provider, call 312-94-STAFF (78233).
Participation is voluntary and the first time you enroll a dependent, you must provide proof of their relationship with you. This may include marriage certificate, certificate of civil union, birth certificate or other appropriate legal documents. Failure to do so will result in your dependent(s) not being enrolled.

Individual Disability Insurance
Guaranteed Issue Individual Disability Insurance is available from The Standard. These policies include a True Own Occupation definition of disability for your medical specialty, among many other optional features, to maximize your financial protection. These policies are fully customizable regarding both benefit amounts and features in order to meet the varying needs of each resident and fellow. Life Insurance
All house staff receive free $50,000 group term life insurance. Additional supplemental insurance up to five times your yearly salary is available for purchase at discounted group rates.

Paid and Unpaid Leave Benefits
To request a leave, house staff should contact their program director and GME, 403 Armour Academic Building, (312) 942-5495.
- Parental Leave: House staff are eligible for up to six weeks of paid parental leave (see Salary Continuation and Medical Leave of Absence sections for more). Vacation may be used to extend leave. Leave requires departmental approval. Download forms from MedHub and send to the GME office when completed.
- Caregiver Leave: House staff are eligible for up to six weeks of paid caregiver leave for the care of an immediate family member with a serious health condition. Vacation may be used to extend paid leave. Leave requires departmental approval. (see Medical Leave of Absence section for more). Leave requires departmental approval. Download forms from MedHub and send to the GME office when completed.
- Salary Continuation Period: House staff may qualify for up to three months of leave with salary and benefits due to an extended illness or disability, including maternity-related disability, where appropriate under the Salary Continuation Period. The request for leave must include a physician’s explanation and necessary completed forms. Download the leave request in MedHub.
- Medical Leave of Absence: House staff may use up to twelve weeks total leave to care for a spouse, parent, or child with a serious health condition, where appropriate and with a note from the individual’s or the individual’s spouse’s, parent’s or child’s treating physician. After available vacation and caregiver leave are exhausted, subsequent leave is unsalaried; however, the house staff may maintain benefits by paying the Health and Dental insurance premium contribution. - Long-Term Disability: Long-term disability benefits begin after 90 days of continuous disability per the plan’s eligibility and benefit terms. After 45 days of short-term disability, a notice must be filed in order to accommodate processing time. For more information, call The Standard at 800-368-1135.
Parking
GME provides free garage parking at the medical center. House staff must pay a $30 deposit for the AVIT transponder, which is refunded upon return at clearance/graduation. Non-compliance with timely medical records dictation may put this benefit in jeopardy.

Post-Call Transportation
Rush house staff are encouraged to use post-call transportation if they believe it would be unsafe to drive home due to extreme fatigue. GME will authorize reimbursement of up to $50 for a taxi, train ride, or ride share (Uber or Lyft) home. Prescription Benefits
As part of the Rush medical plan, you have coverage for prescription drugs regardless of the medical plan option you choose. How much you pay for each prescription depends on the medical plan chosen, the type of medication you need and where you purchase it.
You can purchase prescription drugs at a retail pharmacy, mail order or at Rush’s pharmacy located in the Professional Building. If you purchase your prescription at the Rush pharmacy, in the Rush University Medical Center, you get a $3 prescription discount on a 30-day supply and a $9 prescription discount on a 90-day supply.

Retirement Savings Plan
The 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan is a long-term, pre-tax savings plan that allows you to save and invest money for future retirement needs. You are automatically enrolled in this plan with a 6% of pay pre-tax contribution rate deducted from your paycheck. You have 45 days from your date of hire to opt out, or you can change the amount you save at any time. Rush provides a dollar-for-dollar match on the first 6% of pay you save. You decide how to invest your contributions and are always 100% vested in any money you contribute to the plan. You are eligible to receive the matching contributions when you become vested in them after completing three years of vesting service at Rush.

Sick Days
House staff may take up to five sick days per year at the discretion of their program director. Sick days are not subtracted from vacation time. See also Wellness Days.
Technology Stipend
House staff will receive a technology stipend of $600 per year to help cover work-related expenses associated with personal cell phones and mobile devices. House staff will receive the stipend in four installments in their paychecks.
Vacation
House staff are eligible for the equivalent of four work weeks of vacation with pay. Vacation and/or educational leave must be scheduled by mutual agreement with the program director or designee.
Vision Service Plan
Rush offers a vision plan which provides comprehensive coverage including eye exams and discounts on glasses or contact lenses.

We Care Grant
This grant provides up to $1000 of financial assistance for employees experiencing a temporary financial emergency due to a recent emergency event, such as a natural disaster, loss of a family member, or an extended leave of absence. Wellness Days
House staff may take up to two wellness days per year to attend to medical, mental health and dental care appointments, including those scheduled during their working hours. Wellness days may also be taken when house staff are unable to attend work due to fatigue, illness, family emergencies, and parental leave. Wellness days are scheduled at the discretion of the program director. They are not subtracted from vacation time. See also Sick Days.
