In partnership with Illinois Retina Associates, RUSH University sponsors a two-year vitreo-retinal surgery fellowship based at RUSH University Medical Center.
Our elite program develops vitreo-retinal surgeons who practice with excellence, providing superior care to patients and working successfully with colleagues in all settings. Several program graduates are distinguished RUSH faculty members today, with many others working throughout the U.S. and Canada, making significant contributions to the specialty in many areas.
Over 24 months, you'll build expertise in the diagnosis and management of retinal and vitreous diseases through comprehensive didactic learning and hands-on surgical experience guided by faculty leaders.
Our fellowship highlights surgical training to build skills, with fellows averaging 1.5 days weekly in the operating room (about 4 - 8 cases per week). You'll experience a full range of vitreoretinal surgery cases, from fresh primary detachments to complex tertiary referrals, gradually progressing from observation to performing full cases as your abilities develop. All surgery is directly supervised by a faculty member.
Upon completion, you will have the skills and confidence to perform all vitreo-retinal procedures independently and will be proficient in these medical retina diagnoses and therapies.
Our program reinforces values of diligence, professionalism, thoroughness, and respect for patients and colleagues. You'll contribute to the education of residents, complementing faculty teaching. And you'll be encouraged to participate in clinical or basic science research studies with support from faculty mentors.
How to apply
We select one new fellow per year. Candidates (except those considering the research-based fellowship/observership) must register for the match at the San Francisco Matching Program website. Once registered, please review our program listing and check "View Profile" to confirm all documents/materials required. Please submit the completed application file by DATE ##.
We invite approximately 15 candidates for fall interviews with faculty. The selection process is based on your academic achievement, reference letters and a demonstrated interest in academic endeavors.
After all parties submit their rank list to the SF Matching Program, the final match takes place on the date determined by the SFMP.
International candidates
International candidates are welcome to apply if they qualify for an Illinois permanent physician medical license #036 and an H1B visa. A license is not required for this program.
International candidates are considered separately for research-based fellowship/observerships. If interested, please email your curriculum vitae to Terri Davis and clearly indicate "Research Fellowship/Observership." We will contact you when a position is available.
