Chicago is hosting the Democratic National Convention from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22. With events at the United Center, McCormick Place and other venues around Chicago, the convention will lead to road closures and likely traffic delays around Rush University.
While Rush University will be fully operational during the convention, university community members traveling to and from the Rush University Medical Center campus can expect road closures along with traffic and public transit delays, particularly from Aug. 15 to Aug. 24.
The Rush DNC Steering Committee has partnered with local, state and federal agencies to prepare for this major event. From a readiness drill to signage and communications throughout the campus, the committee has worked hard to ensure Rush is prepared.
Rush University colleges, research affairs, faculty council, staff council and student senate worked collaboratively to create preparedness plans to ensure the safety of the university community. All plans were approved in alignment with the Rush system and its DNC Steering Committee.
How has Rush University planned for the DNC?
Key events, exams and meeting schedules at Rush University have been adjusted to avoid peak traffic times. University support services will continue to be fully operational during the DNC window, with many services operating remotely, Aug. 12 – 23.
I will be commuting to campus during the DNC – what should I do?
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to check with program directors or leaders about remote learning/work or on-campus events during the DNC. If you will be commuting to the medical center campus during the convention:
- Stay informed. For the most up-to-date information about road closures, download the city of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications app. You can also review the secure zone around the United Center to plan the best way to get to Rush.
- Give yourself extra time — potentially double your usual travel time — to get to and from Rush. Car travel and public transit may be affected.
What road closures and other delays can I expect?
There will be a secure zone around the United Center, which may affect access to areas around Rush University Medical Center.
