  • Lisa LaGorio, PhD, MPH, CCC-SLP, is an assistant professor, active clinician and researcher.  She has been a medical speech-language pathologist for over 20 years and has worked evaluating and treating communication, voice and swallowing disorders across multiple patient populations from NICU to stroke and geriatrics.  Additionally, she has worked across the medical continuum of care from the acute care hospital through inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and skilled nursing facilities.  LaGorio completed her doctoral and public health/epidemiology studies at the University of Florida, where she worked with leading international experts in dysphagia rehabilitation and rehabilitation clinical trialing.  Her primary teaching responsibilities include the core dysphagia course, a course on head and neck cancer and a course on tracheostomy and ventilator dependence.  LaGorio’s research interests include the study of aging effects on swallowing physiology; the development of novel protocols for dysphagia evaluation, prevention and rehabilitation; and the use of simulation for interprofessional clinical training.  Her research includes collaborations with the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, the otolaryngology department/head and neck cancer program, the pediatric department, the respiratory care department and the Rush Center for Clinical Skills and Simulation.
