Kia “Ashley” Burks, OTD, OTR/L is an occupational therapist (OT) and doctoral capstone coordinator within RUSH University’s occupational therapy department. A RUSH alum, doctorate in occupational therapy in 2021 where she co-founded the department’s first Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD) chapter and the Rush OTs in Action (ROTA) committee to address diversity, equity, anti-racist, and inclusive practices within the program. Burks' doctoral work also focused on promoting equity and resilience within underserved families seeking early intervention services.
As a practicing clinician, she has worked at several major academic and level 1 trauma centers as an acute care therapist in addition to her recent role as a street outreach OT serving individuals experiencing homelessness.
Within the department, Burks is responsible for the capstone courses and is passionate about student mentorship, and DEI practices within occupational therapy education and the populations served by the profession.
